A thought spurred by S3 C3, Nessun Dorma

Postby AmigaDragon » January 31st, 2008, 8:46 pm

Sitting between rereadings of the story, I had a thought based on a small element in the chapter. Red first plays Nessun Dorma for Nila then gets her to sing it. Because of that, I searched for and downloaded a copy of the song to hear it.

Now for my thought (whether a valid question or not in the Thorhammer universe context). With all the invasions and such going on with the building war, where is Earth (Terra or whatever else you want to call it) hiding in all this?

I've wondered that myself a few times. We know from what's in the story that earth/humans have had in some ways at least a large impact on other cultures so it would be interesting to know what's going on with this ball of dirt we call home.

There's two possible answers to that, now, isn't there?

1. Earth could not exist in this universe...

2. It just hasn't come up in the story yet (if ever).

So far we've seen governments (such as the Amar'I or the Fox) with their capital worlds, but there's been no mention of a human empire. Curious.

Or perhaps...
1a. Earth doesn't exist in this universe.
1b. Earth isn't in the story's current galaxy.

I'd prefer 1a, but that's just me. Somehow I doubt that's really the case, from various hints in the story. Well, at least it probably did exist at some point... Whether it still does, who knows?

I've carefully (okay, so it isn't that hard) avoided the subject of Earth inside the story because of the potential problems it could lead to. If we get into Earth, people will wonder if there was an Earth empire, and if so, what happened to it. If it's still around, that complicates the story because I'd have to deal with it. If it's not, people might wonder what happened to it (and also be offended possibly by the idea of humanity being truncated).

So I just avoid it. For all intents and purposes, humanity is just another race scattered around the galaxy.

If I ever get around to actually formalizing this story, I probably will address Earth and humanity. But for now, it's just an interesting speculative. :)

There's always the Legend of the Galactic Heroes method...Earth is way on the fringe of inhabited space and basically abandoned (besides a small cult that worships the Earth, freaky), because its location sucks.

Top-quality anime, btw.

The game world I use for D&D (2E dangit!) doesn't have humans, so I don't have to worry about it.

The way i read it most happens in the core where stars are closer together.
So there is place for a earth that is faar away from the center of the universe so to say, an earth who has its faar away corner and empire simply too faar away to be of any impact.

Maybe the high tech not ususal in the core originates from there, that place where even a fast capsula needs weeks to reach and month per spaceship.

And the humans in the core simply people who like to travel?
